Happy New Year, everyone in the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies. I hope that you all have a wonderful year in 2016.

In next March, we will conclude an agreement of the nursing student exchange program with NUS. By this agreement, about four students at each institution will visit the host institute every year. This is a great opportunity for our students to widen international horizons, and for nursing students in NUS, it must be an interesting experience to get the feel of nursing education in Japan. Akita city, located at the coast of the Sea of Japan in the northern part of Japan, is a smaller city when it is compared to Singapore. However, Akita is the center of economy, culture and politics of surrounding area, with beautiful nature, unique historical places and a lots of kind people, which students from NUS must be impressed.

Our institute has trained nurses, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists for 4 years’ program. In Japan, facing the problems with the declining birth rate and aging population, we are required to establish comprehensive community care system that enables elderly people can live till the end of life in the local community by their own values. Thus, the number of nursing students who consider to contribute community-based services in the future is increasing, and students from NUS may have an interest in such specific situations of health care system in Japan.

We are looking forward to meeting you in Akita, next June.

Sincerely,

Hideya Kodama
Dean of the School of Health Science,
Akita University Graduate School of Medicine and Faculty of Medicine

看護学専攻の2年生からのメッセージ

Happy New Year, nursing students in NUS! We are second year nursing students in Akita University, and will be promoted in next April, because hear in Japan, the new school term will begin in April. About two years have passed since we entered this university, and, so far, we have studied mainly about basic human physiology and fundamental nursing concept and practices.

We are very delighted to know that we will welcome nursing students from NUS next June. We are very interested in your university life and culture in Singapore. We want to know the education system in NUS, where simulation system is effectively made a part of education. We want to know features of nursing where diverse ethnic groups with various cultures and religion live together in Singapore. Moreover, we want to know some nursing interventions which are different from ours.

After them, some of us will visit NUS in March, 2017. We are very excited to think about city of Singapore from now on.

We are looking forward to meeting you next June.

Sincerely,

From second year nursing students in the School of Health Science,
Akita University Faculty of Medicine
